Week #3- All About Leo's Strengths vs. Our Weakness

Wrapping up week 3, I am not seeing many changes in behavior, diet or ability. I have noticed an obvious increase in appetite, but is still not open to trying anything new.

We do have a few items that he will eat that are on his "Sometimes" list, and these are covered in this weeks Video Diary update.

This week proved to be more of a challenge for us than for him!

It's a struggle to not set our expectations so high that the vulnerability of disappointment consumes us.

Overcoming the parental anxiety that is attached to this condition in our little guy, is in itself, a test of endurance and faith, not only in the homeopathic treatments, but in ourselves. I note this now because we faced the reality of this weakness.

Let's start with Leo's vocabulary.

I was asked if Leo was "non-verbal"
This is an interesting question. Because the term "non-verbal" indicates to me that he doesn't communicate verbally at all. And that is not the case with him.
However, his vocabulary is very limited. When he wants to go outside, he simply says "outside". When he wants more to drink, he will bring my his cup and say, "more".
He can say "Mama" and "Papa" and even "puppy" but never uses these words.
He can even recite the full alphabet, and identify each letter on flash cards!

So I wouldn't say he is "non-verbal" but at the same time, I wouldn't say that he speaks correctly.

Parental Challenge: When he wants something, sometimes it is difficult and frustrating that we can't understand him or he can't say the words to express himself. Instead, he cries or whines.

We have became masters of the game of "Redirecting"

I want to take this opportunity to thank you ALL for your support!
It is important that we share solutions, and suggestions for families facing the challenges of Autism, through advocacy and support and increasing understanding together! God Bless you ALL!

Here is a good website that discusses food intolerance and how it relates to speech delay:
