Creating Super Shakes

This week we bought a juicer and began experimenting with combinations to get dense nutrition into Leo's little tummy!

Leo doesn't drink any juice. His drink of choice, up to this point, has been Pediasure with Fiber. Pediasure has Dairy and Soy, both of which are known to cause extreme sensitivity in children with Autism. It also contains GMOs!

We have come to rely on Pediasure shakes to meet Leo's nutritional needs for a long time now. He has grown and maintained normal body weight and height despite his very limited diet. So our reliance on the shakes is tough to remove from all of us, not just Leo.

We switched Leo from whole milk to coconut milk a couple of months ago, after researching the dairy and gluten effects on children with Autism. And though Leo consumes donuts and cookies, both with gluten, we are standing by with gluten free alternatives when he comes around to trying something NEW!

Our dietary goal this month is to wean Leo off of the Pediasures and introduce a more natural and nutritional alternative.

First juice I made was literally everything! I added celery, cucumber, broccoli, carrots, apples, grapes, kale, and spinach. Yes- it was a SUPER Shake! I would pour about 1 ounce of juice into his sippy cup and fill the rest of the way up with Pediasure.

Then I got creative and brave. I looked up the nutritional value of specific vegetables and fruits, to find the right combination to give Leo what he needs without the aid of the Pediasure.

Raspberries came in first for the best source of fiber. Kale is a super-food! Red grapes are packed with antioxidants. So through trial and lots of error, I came up with a drink that I can slip by him without adding more than an once of Pediasure.

1/2 cup Raspberries.  1 Apple.  1 Pear.  1 full stock of Kale. 1/2 cup of Red Grapes.

An ounce of Juice, with a teaspoon of Raw Probiotics, 3 ounces of coconut milk, and 1 packet of Stevia Sweetener.

There's about a 70% success rate with not having to add Pediasure. But most of the time, he has to see me pour it into the cup, even if it's just a little.

I will also be looking for a natural protein powder. With any luck, I hope to find one that will give the taste of the Pediasures!

So there's our dietary challenge and goals for the month! We will be keeping the Blog updated as we go along, and as we achieve our goals and set more!
