Week #5- Magnesium deficiency

An amazing amount of information from all areas of the world have been pouring in, people sharing and imparting their personal stories, suggestions and knowledge on all things "autism" related.

I cannot thank each and every one of you enough!

It is our ability, as concerned and misguided parents, to see outside the realm of the set standards from the medical profession and it's advocates, that we educate each other, and strengthen each other through personal experience and research.

We are each other's support group!

With every passing week that we have embarked on this holistic approach to treating autism, we have been given several avenues to research, as well as the comforting assurance that we are not alone.

Several months ago, a dear friend of mine recommended a magnesium supplement for Leo. She explained that there is a deficiency of epidemic proportions in the food we eat, and it's connection to children on the spectrum is undeniable!

This is worth serious consideration!

I found a great website that explains the connection between autism and magnesium deficiency. This is what it has to say:

"Magnesium absorption is dependent on intestinal health, which is compromised in leaky gut syndromes that the majority of autistic children suffer from."

You can visit the website HERE

Another source sent to me in email from Julie Daman explains the benefits of Epsom Salts baths:

"Epsom salts are comprised of magnesium and sulfate - 2 key nutrients that many kids on the spectrum are low in.

Magnesium is a major mineral in the body and is involved in over 300 reactions! It eases stress and helps with anxiety, concentration and blood sugar regulation. Blood sugar regulation is a key factor in some kids with ADHD.

The other component of epsom salts, sulfate, is a major player in our detoxification system, the part of our metabolism that removes toxins from the body. Research shows that kids in the spectrum have higher amounts of heavy metals in their body compared to their neurotypical peers. Sulfate helps gently boost their detoxification ability."

You can see more at her website HERE

After researching this subject, we concluded that it could only benefit our little Leo to add Epsom Salts to his bath. Julie Daman says to dissolve 1-2 cups of E.S. in hot water, then add to his bath, once or twice a week. Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the associated health benefits.

Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it.

Since Leo is now undergoing a detox through the homeopathic remedies and diet change, it only makes sense to add this particular recommendation to his regimen.

In our Video Diary for Week #5, I discuss this and other suggestions we've received from all of you!

Thank you so much for all the support and guidance!
